Autograph manuscript copy of a letter written by Winfield Scott to William L. Marcy, Secretary of War, replying to Marcy's letters ordering him to appear before a court of inquiry in Mexico. Scott defends his actions in the Mexican War, summarizing his communications with the War Department and the course of events in his campaign. Bound in are an engraved portrait of Scott and notes of J. M. Fox, a former owner.
